Art Therapy for Children, Youth & Adults

We believe everyone deserves a safe, non-judgemental space to navigate roadblocks and work towards building a fuller, more meaningful life. One of our core values is accessibility and we recognize that traditional therapy approaches don’t work for everyone. That is why we also offer creative therapy approaches, like art therapy and music therapy. Art therapy provides the opportunity to bring more than just words into your therapy sessions. We can use art, in addition to words, to explore, express, and process.

As Professional Art Therapists, we are specially trained to incorporate art into sessions. Many of the reasons you might consider starting traditional therapy, are the same reasons to come to art therapy. The main difference is that we can use creative art in some form to work towards your goals. How we do so depends on your goals, interests, and strengths — we create the treatment plan that best suits you.

Why Art Therapy?

Art therapy harnesses the creative process to help you express feelings and thoughts that can be difficult to articulate through words alone. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which relies heavily on verbal communication, art therapy provides an alternative means of exploring and processing emotions. This can be particularly powerful for those who struggle with verbal expression due to trauma, anxiety, or developmental differences.

The nonverbal nature of art often allows for a deeper, sometimes more honest self-exploration, bypassing internal censorship and resistance that might arise in conversation. This creative outlet can lead to new insights, emotional release, and a sense of empowerment.

Art Therapy FAQs

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression to support emotional wellbeing, self-understanding, and healing. Art therapy can help people process emotions, reduce stress, explore experiences, and express thoughts that may be difficult to put into words.

Do I need to be artistic to benefit from art therapy?

No. Art therapy focuses on the therapeutic process rather than artistic skill or talent. No previous art experience is needed to participate or benefit from sessions.

What can art therapy help with?

Art therapy may support anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation, self-esteem, grief, stress, neurodivergence, and life transitions. It can also help individuals who struggle to express emotions verbally.

What happens during an art therapy session?

Art therapy sessions may involve drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, or other creative activities alongside verbal processing and reflection. Sessions are adapted to each client’s comfort level, interests, and therapeutic goals.

Is art therapy helpful for children and teens?

Yes. Art therapy can be especially helpful for children and teens because creative expression often feels more natural and accessible than traditional talk therapy. Art therapy may support emotional regulation, confidence, communication, and self-expression.

Can adults benefit from art therapy?

Absolutely. Art therapy can support adults experiencing stress, anxiety, burnout, trauma, emotional overwhelm, or difficulty expressing emotions verbally. Creative approaches can help deepen insight and emotional processing.
