How to Find the Right Therapist in Guelph
Most people start searching and then stall, because therapist profiles begin to sound the same after the fifth one.
Fit matters. The working relationship between you and your therapist is widely recognised as one of the most important parts of therapy, which is why the person matters as much as the credentials on the page.
Here's what's worth weighing up:
Approach: Some therapists work structurally, with tools and practice between sessions. Others work more exploratively, at the pace of the conversation. Neither is better. One will suit you more.
Speciality: A therapist who works daily with trauma brings different instincts than one who specialises in relationships, ADHD, or postpartum support.
Format: Talking is not the only way in. Music therapy and art therapy give you other routes when words feel like hard work.
Practicalities: Session times, budget, in person or online, and whether your benefits plan covers that therapist's designation.
Rather than leaving you to work that out from bios alone, we offer a free 15-minute matching consultation. You tell us what you’re looking for. We pair you with the therapist on our team best suited to it.
Eighteen clinicians, one clinic, and a deliberately wide range of training.
Our team includes Registered Psychotherapists, Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying), a Registered Social Worker, Professional Art Therapists, and Accredited Music Therapists. Several hold more than one designation.
KS Therapy Services was founded by Kathleen Skinner, a Registered Psychotherapist and Accredited Music Therapist, who also provides clinical supervision for practitioners working toward dual credentials.
Our music therapists are trained in verbal counselling as well as music therapy. In practice that means a session can move between talking and music depending on what is working for you that day, rather than committing you to one or the other.

Affordable therapy sessions run on a pay what you can basis, from $20 to $90, with Master's level interns working under supervision.
The first 15 minute consultation is free either way.
Psychotherapy and counselling therapy are exempt from GST and HST across Canada, so the session fee is what you pay.

Why KS Therapy Services is Right for You
Is Music Therapy for you?
If you are looking to better your mental health and well-being creatively, music therapy could be a good fit!
At KSTS, we provide mental-health focused music therapy; all our music therapists are trained in verbal counselling AND music therapy. That means we can move flexibly between words and music, depending on what is going to work best for you. Sessions might not look much different than traditional counselling, involving as music or as little music as you want. There is no musical experience required to benefit.
For many people, music is already important for their well-being. By incorporating music in therapy, we harness this inherent therapeutic power in sessions. Clients often say that music can help them put words to experiences or allow them to express what they are feeling without words. It can also help you feel more comfortable with me and the therapeutic process. It is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist!

Guelph Therapy FAQs

Therapy in Guelph generally runs between $130 and $160 for a 50 minute session with a fully registered therapist, with the range driven by designation and years of experience. Reduced rate sessions with Master's level interns working under supervision start at $20 on a pay what you can basis. Psychotherapy and counselling therapy are exempt from GST and HST in Canada, so the session fee is the full cost. The first 15 minute consultation is free.

No referral is needed to see a Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Social Worker, or counsellor in Ontario. You can book directly. A referral may still be worth having if your extended health plan requires one for reimbursement, so it is worth checking your policy before a first session.
-
In everyday use the titles overlap considerably. "Psychotherapist" is regulated in Ontario under the Psychotherapy Act and requires registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, while "therapist" and "counsellor" are broader terms that can describe several regulated professions, including social work. What matters more than the title is the practitioner’s registration, their training, and whether their designation is covered by your benefits plan.
-
Yes. Registered therapists in Ontario can work with clients anywhere in the province by video, and many people use a mix of in person and online sessions depending on the week. Online sessions remove travel time and tend to make scheduling easier around work and family. The same fees, registration requirements, and insurance coverage apply.

Therapy is not only for crisis. People come in for anxiety, low mood, burnout, grief, relationship difficulties, ADHD and neurodivergence, or because something feels stuck and they want to understand it better. A free consultation call is usually the quickest way to find out whether it is a fit, without committing to anything.
-
There is no set number of sessions. Some people come for six to eight sessions with a specific goal in mind, others continue longer where they are working through trauma or long-standing patterns. Most therapists review progress with you periodically, so you can decide together whether to continue, change approach, or finish.
