How do I book an appointment?  

KS Therapy Services uses the software Jane App to book appointments. You can do this online, by clicking the "book appointment" button on the top bar. This will take you to my schedule and show my availability. Select which service you would like to book, the day and time and Jane App will guide you through the rest! Alternatively, you can email kathleen@kstherapyservices.ca  or call 519-291-8881 and I can book an appointment for you.

What payment methods do you accept?  

For online services, we accept all major credit cards and interact e-transfer. Instructions for setting up e-transfer will be provided after booking.

What should I expect after I book an appointment?  

After booking, I will send you a welcome email with more information about the space and how to get there (or links to online platforms if booking telehealth). There is also information about fees and payment, including e-transfer instructions if you choose to use this payment method. I will do my best to make starting with KS Therapy Services as clear and easy as possible!

Do you need previous musical training or experience to benefit from music therapy? 

No! Music is used in many different ways and in all forms during sessions. How music is used usually depends on your interests and your therapeutic goals. Some music therapy sessions involve purely music listening and verbal counselling, others involve purely music making, and some are a combination of both. Music therapists are trained to tailor musical experiences to meet your therapeutic needs.

What is the difference between music therapy and therapeutic music lessons?  

In music psychotherapy, the client and therapist enter into a therapeutic relationship with the intention of working together to improve or maintain the client's mental health and well-being. Goals are usually non-musical and music is used as the active agent of change. In other words, music is the method, not the end goal. In therapeutic music lessons, music is the end goal! The primary goal is to music education -- building musical skills and abilities.

What is a registered psychotherapist (RP)? 

RPs successfully completed training and application requirements to register with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). The CRPO's main goal is to protect the public and ensure RPs are practicing effectively and ethically. As the client, you can contact the CRPO if you have concerns about your therapist. The CRPO also authorizes its registrants to perform the act of psychotherapy, which is a controlled act in Ontario.

What is the difference between traditional psychotherapy and music psychotherapy? 

If you are thinking about why you might decide to see a therapist or some of the things you might work towards, there are very few differences between music psychotherapy and traditional psychotherapy! The main difference some of the ways we work towards your goals. In music psychotherapy, music is used to help us work towards goals and make change. This is often used in combination with verbal counselling.

What is an MTA? 

The Canadian Association of Music Therapists "utilizes the title of Music Therapist Accredited, MTA, to designate music therapists who have successfully completed the certification process" (CAMT, 2020). MTAs have completed: 

  • A Bachelor and/or Master's degree in music therapy. 

  • 1000 hours of clinical internship 

  • The Certification Board of Music Therapists exam 

  • Maintain on-going continuing education requirements.
